Bridge to History: Toccoa
We are so excited to invite you to join us and your fellow Bridge to History Ambassadors for a weekend back in time - as we walk in the footsteps of the original paratroopers of WWII.
March 1-3, 2024
Toccoa, Georgia
If you have ever watched the TV show Band of Brothers or read anything about Dick Winters and the 101st in Normandy, then I am pretty sure Toccoa has popped up on your radar at some point.
Nestled in the beautiful back country of northeast Georgia, Toccoa during WWII was home to the 101st Airborne. This is where the soldiers trained to become Paratroopers. They hiked the infamous Currahee Mountain. And it was here they were forged into the fighting force that would become a helping hand to the liberation of Europe.
3 miles up, 3 miles down
Our friends at Camp Currahee at Toccoa are excited to welcome our Bridge to History Ambassadors. Over the course of the weekend, you can expect many fantastic events including:
CURRAHEE MOUNTAIN: Walk in the literal steps the 101st Airborne as we hike Currahee Mountain. The famous quote, “3 miles up, 3 miles down,” pretty much summarizes the intensity of the mountain. It is no cakewalk. But it is worth every ounce of sweat. To know that every step you take is in the exact footsteps of the paratroopers. The paratroopers who dropped into Normandy in the early hours of June 6, 1944. The paratroopers who earned their name bravely defending Bastogne. And the same paratroopers who eventually stormed Hitler's elite getaway -the Eagles Nest.
CURRAHEE MILITARY HISTORY MUSEUM: With the backdrop of the local train depot, this museum is one you don’t want to miss. With lots of militaria and original artifacts from the war.
C-47 PROJECT: For the last few years, Camp Toccoa at Currahee has been working on rebuilding an original C-47 from the war. She’s a beauty. And if we are really amazing guests, they might just let us help out a little bit. Let’s just say - putting in a couple of rivets in an old warbird is up there on the cool factor list.
MEET WITH VETERANS: The community of Toccoa is rich with military history and veterans’ stories. You will get the opportunity to talk with some veterans and ask them questions.
LODGING
This might be the most exciting part. For two nights you will get to stay in the WWII Barracks that hosted the paratroopers. After the war, everything was torn down. But these barracks have been rebuilt over the last few years using original planking for WWII.
We will have a girls barracks and a boys barracks. A fantastic shower house next door. Basic bedding will be supplied, but if you are driving out, you might want to bring an extra pillow or blanket.
Having stayed in these barracks before, I can speak personally to how awesome it is.
MEALS
Meals included will be:
Friday: - Dinner
Saturday: - Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
Sunday: Breakfast
101st Airborne Paratrooper Jim Martin on top of Mt. Currahee during training in WWII.
Transportation
For those driving in from the East Coast, it is an easy drive from pretty much any direction. And recommended.
